      <image:title>Celler Les Foes - Celler Les Foes</image:title>
<image:caption>Celler Les Foes of Les Coves de Vinromà, Castelló is a free vines project headed by Roger Diaz. The former full-time high school history teacher (now part-time due to the bodega’s success) oversees 3ha of predominantly indigenous grape varieties to the Castelló region. A once thriving area for hundreds of years, Les Coves de Vinromà vines were largely forgotten or replaced with the cash crops du jour over the second half of the 20th century. Roger seeks to ensure centuries-old wine making methods have their rightful place in the local lexicon and collective consciousness of the region.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bodegas Pigar - Bodegas Pigar</image:title>
<image:caption>Bodegas Pigar is a multi-generational story beginning with Juan Garcia’s grandfather who initially planted vines outside Campo Arcis in 1952. Grapes in this region were largely sold to the local co-op to create bulk wines with little sense of place. Juan and Susana believed these old vines were capable of creating fruit for serious, single parcel wines. Juan and Susana created their first vintage in 2016 taking the well-worn pathway back home from their life in the city. Their focus is on the indigenous varieties of Bobal and Royal, while also planting international varieties such as Chardonnay. Drought-resistant vines allow for dry farming in the vineyards and conservation of water usage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The 9ha estate of Iole Rabasco is located in the village of Pianella, province of Pescara, in the heart of Abruzzo. The area offers a unique set of meso and micro climates particular to this north-central corner of Abruzzo; the Adriatic is some 40km away while the base of Gran Sasso flanks the western edge of the Rabasco property. The vineyards have never known the influence of synthetic treatments and are a viticultural postcard inherited from her family’s elders. The bulk of the vinification takes place in stainless steel, preserving the freshness of the hillside’s Trebbiano and Montepulciano, where more highly extracted versions are typically en vogue. The remainder of the line-up finds itself aging in low tech demijohns.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For 4 generations, in a true expression of permaculture, the Schmelzer family has been producing wines on the outskirts of Gols, Austria since 1968. The vine rows live amongst the pollinating bees, farm animals and vegetables grown. The winery is run by Georg and his life-partner Elisabeth. The vines are treated with gentle biodynamics, allowing intuition to be the driving inspiration. 17ha are dry-farmed with no use of pesticides or synthetic treatments. Reds are aged for long periods in neutral oak and whites aged on lees in order to incorporate beautifully. From 2013, Georg has been experimenting with extended skin-contact whites and rosés.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Agricola Macatho, founded in 2016 by partners Macarena del Rio and Thomas Parayre is the prototype for up-and-coming micro negociants. Based in Chiles Maule, BioBio and Itata valleys, Macatho sources from several plots of old vine Pais and Chasselass, among many other varieties. Macarena, a Chilean with French heritage, and Thomas, a Frenchman with South American curiosities met during a harvest with Louis-Antonie Luyt - the roommate of Thomas at the time. The self-described anarchists threatened to have us visit them mid-pandemic before solidifying a partnership, but eventually succumbed to a visit by Zoom accompanied by some of their creations and plenty of Cava.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2004 Jutta Ambrositsch somewhat spontaneously exchanged her position as an art director in an advertising agency to become a vintner. She leased a 0.25 hectare plot of Riesling, making only 650 liters of wine in her first vintage and now spends most of her days in the vineyards. Jutta, with the help of her husband Marco, slowly gathered plots, experience, equipment and cellar space through working with the close-knit community of multi-generational winemakers in Vienna.</image:caption>
